Koh Samui, this beautiful island has been charming its visitors ever since the first tourists arrived in 1971. Those who experience Samui are rewarded with an idyllic tropical retreat with white-sand beaches, a sapphire-blue sea, an abundance of tantalizing Thai cuisine as well as warm and friendly people.

Koh Samui is just 21 kilometers at its widest point and 25 at its longest. Of a surface area of about 250 sqm, it is the third largest island of the Kingdom after Phuket and Koh Chang. Its innerland consists of forests hills of limestone and granite, and the shoreline is made up of countless coconut palm-fringed beaches and bays. The best beaches are at Chaweng and Lamai on the east coast, where you can now find a very wide range of both restaurants and nightspot to suit every taste. Bophut and Maenam, on the calmer northern coast, facing Koh Phan Ngan, are also popular beaches offering a quieter, gentler holiday experience.

Samui’s natural attractions include the coral beds at Laem Sed and Tong Takien, the Hin Lat and Na Muang waterfalls and the phallic rock formation at the southern end of Lamai bay, to identify just a handful. And beyond the main neighboring islands are many others well worth exploring - Koh Phangan (world famous for its monthly Full Moon Parties), Koh Tao (one of the best diving locations in Thailand) and Angthong National Marine Park, a compact archipelago of small and virtually untouched islands which is best explored by sea kayak.

You will find in the following a short description of a selection of “What to Do” and “What to See” on the island. We have also compiled our best recommendation in the “Tour information"

Attractions & Activities on the Island

There are many attractions to see on the island of Samui, enough to satisfy a family. We suggest you some place worth to visit:

Hinta Hinyai “Grandfather and Grandmother Rock”

Their formation and their appearance were made famous by a local tale describing their origin and their existence on the island. The tale tells that the bodies of an old couple would have run aground in the bay after their boat sunk thus creating these weird rock shapes…Located at the south of the beach of Lamai and well indicated by a road sing.

Samui Butterfly garden

You will be able to observe many butterfly species in the wild spreading themselves in a tropical natural environment, among the most beautiful of the region. The observers can witness the cycle of multiplication of some species which increased on the spot, a nice visit for the whole family hive in which you will be able to observe bees working in production and yet a museum where insects of Thailand and other countries are showed. The farm is located on a hill at the south- east end of the island at Na Tien. It is open from 8.30 am to 5.30pm

There are 2 crocodile farms on the island, one which is located behind the airport and on a 7,000 sqm area where you will find more than  100 animal species such as Siam and sea water crocodiles, Caymans, snakes, lizards, apes and many other, There are 2 daily shows at 2 and 4.30 pm.
The second one is situated in the south of the island, at Namuang Waterfall II; it is a good opportunity to admire the country’s wild fauna without needing to venture into the deep jungle.

Aquarium and tiger zoo

If you are not an amateur of diving or snorkeling, you have another solution if you would like to admire underwater fauna, in the south of the island, after the village of Hua Thanon you turn right and follow the ‘’Aquarium and Tiger Zoo ‘’ road signs.

You will be able to see many tropical fish and coral species, among others turtles, sharks, catfishes and many others which come from the local underwater ocean deeps. You will also have the possibility of feeding giant turtles in their vast tanks by buying them some vegetable on sale on the spot. And at the aquarium exit, you will be able to admire magnificent tigers inside their cages, and will be urged to attend a spectacle of birds, including parrots, falcons and sea eagles.

Ancient house

This house was made of teak more than 150 years ago, and with the means of that time, all the parts are fitted together without any nail. The house is located on the right hand side of the road 4170 which leaves afterwards on the left by coming from Hua Thanon village after a few kilometers, there is a ‘’Ancient house‘’ sign post

Snake farm

It is in the area of Taling Ngam in the South of the island and of Nathon, there are 2 daily shows at 11 am and 2 pm.The program is as instructive as entertaining, in the typical Thai style. An enthralling part is a fight between the man and the scorpion and the centipede. There is also a cobra exhibition which only the Samui’s snake farm has got.

Monkey theater

Samui is synonymous with coconut trees - there are literally plantations all over the island, and until tourism arrived, coconuts were the main industry here. How do you get at the coconuts? . Enter the monkey, considered as man's best friend, these industrious little animals are greatly prized and give a demonstration of their incredible dexterity (and not just at picking coconuts) in the outdoor theatre. The entertainment also includes performing elephants. The theater is located on the left by leaving Chaweng on the way to Bophut, in a street behind, there are signposts. Several daily shows, rather funny the monkey will make you laugh and you will spend a good time.

Magic Garden (or heaven’s garden)

A resting place on Samui’s heights, a small waterfall and all around dozens of statuettes which were carved in the rock by a local inhabitant of the name of Nim Thongsuk, he had begun to build the garden in 1976 when he was 77 years old. You will also have the occasion to admire the island from many viewpoints.

Flight

There are many daily flights from the International and domestic Airport in Bangkok; Suvarnabhumi Airport. Bangkok Air flies direct to Samui Airport. A flight schedule with Bangkok Airways Also Thai Airways has a two daily flights to Samui Airport

Thai Airways and Air Asia also flies to Suratthani. From there, just catch the bus or taxi to the ferry in Donsak

Bus

If you prefer a more economical way to travel, we recommend a so called VIP bus from the well-known Khao San Road or from the Southern Bus Terminal at Boromrat Chonnani Road. The VIP buses are more comfortable, and has less seats than a so called A/C bus. You can buy a ticket in almost every travel agency in Bangkok. The ferry ticket is sometimes included in the price.

Train

Another comfortable way to travel is the night train from Hualamphong, (the Bangkok railway station) to Suratthani. The sleeping cars has rather comfortable beds. To travel by railway is a little more expensive than the bus, but you will probably get a better sleep. Upper beds are less expensive than the lower ones. A private "first class" cabin for two persons, is also available. Ideal for couples!

Ferry

The fastest ferries departures from the two main piers in Donsak on the main land with the operators Seatran, and Raja Ferry. The price is about 150 baht for passengers and 450 baht for cars (2010). You will see many of the small surrounding islands if you don't fall asleep.

You might also take the Lomprayah catamaran which departures from Chumphon. The also offer bus rides from Banglamphu in Bangkok. On smaller ferries (such as the ones operated by Songserm from smaller piers situated at the Suratthani coastline), you might be contacted by Thai guys trying to convince you that "their" resort on Samui is the one to choose. It can be a blank or a prize in that "lottery".

Koh Tao

About 70 kms north of Samui is the island of Koh Tao. There are numerous dive sites in and around Koh Tao (Turtle Island). The island is a tropical paradise offering jungle walk and white sandy beaches. Here the water visibility ranges from 15 to 30 meters and includes the popular dive spots of Chumporn and Southwest Pinnacles (which are sunken granite rock), Nang Yuan’s Chinese garden, Green Rock, White Rock and Red Rock.Around the island the waters are home to an abundant range of marine life including barracuda, tuna, snapper and sea turtles.
